Overview
The Australian War Memorial is developing a website to crowdsource transcription of scanned text, photographic, audio and video materials from the Memorial’s National Collection My team and I worked closely with the Memorial to create a design library of components and screens for the new tool. The design has a modern look and feel with historic flourishes that tie into the subject matter. We also worked on the microcopy for UI elements, ensuring the user experience is intuitive and informative.

The transcription tool
The transcription tool has a number of features that allows the user to easily transcribe the material. A control strip above the material allows users to adjust visual properties like zoom, brightness and contrast. The transcription editor includes page line indicators and WYSIWYG editor capabilities.
Above the editor itself lies details on the material being transcribed. I designed a coloured status system and star based difficulty rating that allows community members to quickly understand the properties of the material. Different scenarios and states were captured where a transcript might be being edited by someone else or has sensitive content.

Engagement and incentivisation
Various components and user flows were designed to keep users engaged and feel a sense of community. The tool features a transcription quest which is a collection of material that multiple users can work toward completing. Collaborating with the UX designer we designed various components that show progress, statistics and statuses of the current quest.
A community page was designed that features the latest news and education articles. Community statistics are shown at the top of the page, letting users know that content is growing and being contributed to.
Control and visibility
A dashboard allows users to have complete control of their work. This allows users to keep track of the status of their transcriptions and see how many contributions it has. A filtering system allows power-users to easily locate material by type as well as sort data in the activity table. User activity is presented to the left of the table, allowing users to see the progress they have made as a transcriber.
